We've partnered with two new Indigenous communities — Atlin and Lower Post!
Artscan Circle is thrilled to announce that we've partnered with two new Indigenous communities — Atlin and Lower Post in northern British Columbia. Both communities fall under School District 87 Stikine and serve as a crucial education in the rural and remote northern community.
On March 31 - April 11, 2025, our artist facilitator Rik Leaf travelled to both communities and facilitated music, dancing, songs and slam poetry with the students. Rik is a dynamic touring musician, award-winning songwriter, music and video producer, editor, TV host and author.
We look forward to returning to the communities for the 2025-2026 school year.
Atlin
"We just had our performance day this morning and it was just a blast! We had such a great time with Rik this week and we really hope we see him again. Our students were so enraptured by the music, the dancing, the songs, and the slam poems... he was really able to take hold of the classes, bring them to higher heights, and fill our school with so much joy with hearing his music all over.
We also got to use the Yanshuka camp in the back of the school with the high school in a small, intimate setting. The HS were very timid at first, but eventually they gave in and shared their poems. We really do appreciate your support with bringing Rik through the help of ArtsCan here in Atlin."

“Denetia School had a magical week with Rik Leaf! Rik and the students sang, danced, drummed, learned Indigenous Knowledge and Culture, attended ceremonies, hit the ski slopes and more! Rik’s music resonated with positivity, teamwork and lifting each other up – raising the spirits of our students. Working with Kaska Knowledge Keepers, the students and staff, he captured the essence of our school in a song.
Beyond the music, Rik's natural ability to connect and engage with the students brought joy and creativity, putting a smile on the faces of our entire school community. His ability to listen with care and celebrate each student’s strengths helped build confidence and unity in a powerful way. The week was not only fun and energetic—it was healing, inspiring, and deeply meaningful. We are incredibly grateful for the support that made this unforgettable experience possible. Thank you Artscan Circle - Rik's visit would not have been possible with you!”
