Rhythm, Storytelling, and Community in British Columbia
ArtsCan Circle recently completed two arts and wellness programs in British Columbia, bringing music, cultural teachings, and creative expression to students at schools in Atlin and Lower Post.
Atlin School | Atlin, BC | May 20–22
Led by artist and facilitator Cindy Paul, the program engaged 29 students through songwriting, storytelling, and hands-on musical exploration. The visit included a Community Jam Session and performances at the Globe Theatre on May 20 and 21, attended by 35 additional community members.
Together, students created an original song about Atlin that has since become a source of community pride and one they are eager to perform at their Year End Celebration.
Principal Edel Paracuelles reflected on the impact, saying, "Cindy’s visit was an incredible experience for our students, staff, families, and community. Her warmth, talent, and ability to connect with young people through music made a lasting impact. The experience inspired many of our students to share their own voices and perform with confidence. We are grateful to ArtsCan Circle for making this meaningful opportunity possible."
Denetia Elementary School | Lower Post, BC | May 25–27
Cindy brought the same energy and passion to Denetia Elementary School, where 8 students took part in a music workshop celebrating Indigenous voices and fostering creativity, confidence, and connection. Students explored rhythm, storytelling, songwriting, and cultural expression, and several learned the basics of violin and guitar, with some playing their first songs by the end of the week.
The program also extended into the community, with a visit to Dene Kǫ̀, the Daylu Dena Council band office, where families gathered to hear their children play. Behind the scenes, Cindy repaired existing school instruments and helped prepare new ones purchased by Artscan Circle, leaving students with a stronger, more functional collection to support music learning long after her visit.
Principal Graham Muncaster captured the spirit of the week, stating, "Cindy immediately connected with our students and sparked a genuine interest and love of music. Her warm and positive personality made each student feel capable and willing to express themselves. There were many moments of creativity, passion and pride throughout the week. Our students and community are still talking about her visit and asking when she will return. Souga Sin La — Thank you!”
