Comic & Graphic Novel Workshop in Attawapiskat
In late November 2025, Artscan Circle hosted a week-long Comic Book and Graphic Novel Workshop at Vézina Secondary School in Attawapiskat, a remote Mushkegowuk (Cree) community on the western coast of James Bay in northern Ontario.
The workshop was led by Keith Schooler (Callihoo), a Mohawk Cultural Art Practitioner from the Michel Band in Alberta, and reflected Artscan Circle’s commitment to supporting Indigenous youth through creative learning, cultural expression, and storytelling.
Throughout the week, youth explored visual storytelling and created their own three-page comic books or graphic novels. Students developed skills in character creation, narrative structure, layout, and the relationship between text and image, building confidence and pride in sharing their stories through art.
Artscan Circle also offered follow-up online workshops to support students in completing their projects and continuing to develop their skills. This blended in-person and virtual approach helped youth fully realize their creative visions.
Artscan Circle has worked with the Attawapiskat community for over a decade, reflecting a commitment to long-term, respectful relationships. We look forward to continuing to support youth creativity, cultural expression, and community-led learning through future workshops.
