A Night to Remember: Mattmac Brings Live Music to Graduation in Pikangikum

For the graduating students of Eenchokay Birchstick School in Pikangikum, Ontario, this year's graduation and prom became something they will carry with them for years to come. Thanks to a partnership made possible by Artscan Circle and TD Bank Group, acclaimed artist Mattmac travelled to the remote community to give a live performance in celebration of the graduates and their families.

For many students, it was their very first time experiencing a live show by an artist they know and admire. For others who had first encountered Mattmac through his performance at the Outside Looking In (OLI) program, seeing him again felt like reconnecting with someone who had already touched their lives.

The principal of the school, Parastou Ziadlou, said, "Having Mattmac perform at our graduation and prom was an unforgettable experience that recognized our students' achievements and reminded them their accomplishments are worth celebrating. We are truly grateful to Artscan Circle for making it possible."

The impact was felt just as deeply by the artist. Mattmac described the warmth of the community and the joy of celebrating such an important milestone alongside the graduates and their families, saying, “Playing in Pikangikum was a really meaningful experience for me, and I felt welcomed by the community from the moment I arrived. I'm grateful to Artscan for making opportunities like this happen and would be happy to come back anytime."

Bringing live performances to remote and often underserved communities is at the heart of what Artscan Circle does. Access to the arts should not depend on where a person lives, and events like this one show what becomes possible when artists, educators, and supporters come together. The memories created that night, the pride on the faces of the graduates, and the sense of connection that filled the room are exactly the kind of lasting impact we hope to create in every community we reach.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this celebration possible, and we look forward to continuing to support live performances at graduations and proms in the years ahead.

This performance was made possible thanks to funds provided by TD Bank Group, whose generous support helps ArtsCan Circle bring meaningful arts experiences to remote communities across the country.
